Mould and Bacteria

Moulds and Bacteria

Moulds and bacteria exist almost everywhere, indoors and out. If moisture content is high enough, these microscopic organisms can grow on many surfaces, including drywall, wood and wood products, ceiling tiles, wallpaper and carpets. Health Canada states that mould growth in any indoor environment is undesirable and should be removed.

The Health Risks

You can be exposed to moulds and bacteria by touching or ingesting them or by inhaling the spores or toxins released into the air by mould or bacteria. The health risks associated with mould and bacteria exposure include allergic reactions, infection, irritation, invasive disease and poisoning from toxins. Factors that increase the risk of illness include:

  • Susceptibility to illness;
  • Amount of exposure to microbiological contaminants; and
  • Species of mould and/or bacteria

If you believe you are ill because of exposure to mould or bacteria in a building, consult your physician. Even if you are not sensitive to moulds, we recommend that you try to eliminate indoor mould growth.
